ASIANetwork - Luce Foundation Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow Program
Providing grants for the employment of Teaching Fellows in Asian Studies
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- According to the guidelines, colleges must be members of ASIANetwork for one year prior to making application for a grant. How is this year defined?
- Applicants for the 2011-12 program must have joined ASIANetwork prior to January 1, 2010, and must have paid their membership dues for the 09-10 and 10-11 academic years.
- Can a college submit 2 applications in one year?
- No. Each college may submit only 1 application.
- Can a college that has received an ASIANetwork - Luce Teaching Fellow grant apply in subsequent years?
- No.
- Can a college submit a proposal in the year following the submission of an unsuccessful proposal?
- Yes.
- Will a representative from the Luce Foundation be on the selection committee?
- No. The selection committee, consisting of 3 to 5 people, will typically include the executive director of ASIANetwork, the program director, and current and former members of the ASIANetwork board of directors.
- Are the colleges that receive the grant required to offer their teaching fellow housing, health insurance, and other benefits?
- No. The hiring college makes compensation decisions. It is assumed that the entire $30,000 grant will be used for the benefit of the teaching fellow in the form of salary and/or benefits. Additional salary or benefits may be added to the $30,000 at the discretion of the hiring college.
- Why does ASIANetwork require that a representative from the host
college attend the AN annual conference during the year of the search
and who should attend?
- ASIANetwork is dependent on the active participation of our members.
We include the stipulation for conference attendance in most of our
grant-funded programs as a way to foster participation in conference
activities. At the conference, we will conduct a meeting of the 4
colleges that will be hiring teaching fellows for the following
year. We prefer that the mentor/coordinator attend the conference,
or, if this is not possible, someone who is close to the search
process. And, of course, we encourage whoever attends to engage
other ASIANetwork members and to enjoy the panels, presentations, and
performances at the conference.
- Who should attend the ASIANetwork annual conference with the
teaching fellow during the year of the grant?
- We strongly suggest that the mentor/coordinator accompany the
teaching fellow to the AN annual conference. If this is not
possible, then someone who has worked closely with the teaching
fellow would be appropriate.
- Does the teaching fellow have any responsibilities at the annual
conference?
- We are planning to organize a panel presentation for the 4 teaching
fellows where they can present their research and perhaps discuss its
implications for their teaching.
